Immunopsychiatry (PANS/PANDAS)
What is immunopsychiatry, PANS and PANDAS?
Immunopsychiatry interconnects disciplins such as immunology, psychiatry and neuroscience. In immunopsychiatry, the immune system has an influence on your mental and physical health. PANS and PANDAS are immunopsychiatric conditions.
PANS stands for pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome. Children with PANS instantaneously fall ill with substantial psychiatric and somatic symptoms. If this occurs in the aftermath of an infection, it is called PANDAS. Pandas stans for pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections.
Among the sudden symptoms are tics or jerky movements, mood swings, acting aggressive or “hyper”. Other symptoms are anxiety, depression, fears, sleep disorders, eating disorders, sudden trouble with handwriting or other fine motor skills, self-harm or suicidal behaviors.
